Some legitimate ways to boost backlinks to your website:

Social bookmarking. Remind your readers that your site can be bookmarked on del.icio.us, Ma.gnolia, Digg etc. by popping those little buttons on any articles you post on your site. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t bookmark a few of your own pages in your social bookmark profiles either, although you shouldn’t go overboard in that regard. Remember that when one person has bookmarked an article, it’s more likely to be spotted by others. Also, many people publish their bookmarks as a feed on their blogs and in other places, so getting bookmarked is a good idea.

Join a forum. If you run a website, I hope that you’re an expert in something. That something might be setting up websites, of course, or buying and selling domain names, but it could also be something to do with the theme of your website: perhaps you know everything there is to know about jam-making or used cars. Get on forums, stick a link in your signature, and participate in the community that surrounds your specialist subject. (This is the Internet; you can be pretty certain that there is such a community.) Make sure that your contributions are useful, as they will effectively be an advertisement for your expertise. Present yourself well: make sure that your spelling and grammar are immaculate, and don’t be too opinionated or push your product or service on other people.

Write articles. If you’re not sure what there is on your website that people could possibly bookmark, it may be time to write some articles. Articles can be written about most subjects, and you can either publish them on your own website for others to link to, or submit them to an article site with a ‘resource box’ at the bottom which contains a link to your site. People can then repost them on their websites, and you’ll have some nice, relevant backlinks. (A word of warning: if you are submitting your articles to article sites, do not post them on your own website too, as search engines are getting wise to this content-boosting practice. All your own site’s content should be unique wherever possible.) Again, you should make sure that your presentation is excellent, as the articles are essentially adverts for your site.

Have an interesting website. Really, this is the best way to gain backlinks. If your website contains interesting content, people will want to link to it.
