Poor old Microsoft. Just when they thought they’d dealt with the last spate of cybersquatting, along comes another one - and this time, it’s a registrar in the dock for infringing MS’s precious trademarks.
Registrar Red Register has allegedly registered 125 domain names which are “confusingly similar” to Microsoft trademarks, including “windowslivecare.com” and “msnmsnger.com”. Microsoft claims that the domains have been misused in advertising by the registrar, which aimed to mislead customers by suggesting that advertising was endorsed or authorised by Microsoft.
I find it hard to feel sorry for Microsoft. It’s pretty silly to try to profit from their fame, though; everyone knows they’ve got some pretty good lawyers and are very happy to sue to high heaven anyone who dares attempt to infringe their trademarks.
