Increase in .us Domain Registration

It’s pleasing to see that .us domain name registration is finally on the up.

1&1.com has apparently reported an increase of 12% in .us domain registrations (although no one is reporting what the period was over which this increase took place - typical internet journalism). I say this because .us is probably one of the most under-appreciated ccTLDs in the business. Perhaps because America thinks of itself as the birthplace of the internet, it’s been .com or nothing for Americans, for as long as domain names have been big business. Considering America’s population, their registration rates for .us domain names are disproportionately low. The most popular ccTLD is .de (Germany), with .uk being in the top ten. Anyway, I’m pleased that at least some American registrants are starting to see the value of a good ccTLD name.

I’m sure that the main reason for the increase in popularity is the declining number of meaningful .com domain names. As I may have mentioned once or twice before, the lack of decent .coms out there is causing all sorts of crimes against the English language in the form of meaningless made-up words and ridiculous misspellings. Fewer rubbish .com domain names, and more well thought out ccTLD domains, can only be a good thing. What’s more, .us has a nice system whereby there’s a second-level domain for each state, which will obviously improve matters for search engines, as well as credibility for local businesses.
