Domains on eBay

Domains on eBay range from real bargains to close-to-extortionate flops. But I do know a couple of people who’ve found some decent stuff on eBay; someone got insane.co.uk for peanuts a few months ago.

Here’s an idea of just what the range of prices and names is on eBay (obviously based on prices at the time of posting):

  • meetacelebrity.com - £500

Someone might want this, I guess, but is it really that viable for serious development? What exactly would you do with it?

  • tvforthe.com - £1895
  • videoforthe.com - £1895
  • domainsforthe.com - £1895
  • musicforthe.com - £1895
  • mp3sforthe.com - £1895

Stupidly over-priced – they don’t even make any sense.

  • product.pro - $2500

Unsurprisingly pricey; however, I know generic domains tend to go for a lot of money, but I’m not sure how valuable they actually are for development. I can’t even see a lot of type-in traffic coming from this one, and who searches for “product”?

  • gamergang.com - £0.99

Possibly a bargain, although there’s already a bid on it, so who knows how it’ll turn out?

  • planetearth.co.uk - £250,000

A lot of money, but an attractive domain name.

  • dianaforever.com, .net, .co.uk, .eu, .org & .info - £99
  • princessofwales.org - £25

Ooh, Diana fever really makes me mad >_< I bet these are for sale now because it’s six years or however long since she died. I expect they’ll both go for more than the current asking price.

  • mourinho4england.com - £0.99
  • mourinho4england.co.uk - £0.99

Examples of those quick-off-the-mark domain registrations that look like a good idea until you realise that they’re only useful for about a week. I can’t see what use these will be to anyone, really.

A word of warning: I’d be careful about who you buy from.  Make sure an escrow is used, and find out whether or not you’re paying for it. I’d be slightly worried about buying off eBay in general, because you don’t know how reliable the seller is going to be in terms of actually handing the goods over.  Good luck with bargain-hunting, though!
