An end to domain tasting

So for those who don’t know what domain tasting is (not as nice as it may sound) Domain tasting is a method that exploits the “add grace period” — a five-day period following registration where the domain name can be deleted at no cost to the registrar — during this time they can see how profitable the domain is and decide whether to keep it or to return it at no charge.

Again ICANN may come to the rescue to clamp down on such practices because as expected the five-day no pay period has often led to registered names being used as “parking pages” containing pay-per-click advertising relevant to the registered domain name or associated search terms. Also “typosquatting” is as a result of domain tasting in some cases Tasting also creates the potential for internet users to be harmed by spamming, malware and fraud, and for companies to lose web traffic and brand reputation. As we know now that is big business and also potentially lucrative for the scammers.

Step in ICANN who proposes to remove this magical five day grace period and also stop domain “knitting” (which is where a domain name is registered for five days and then let loose and continually re-registered).

This will have a positive effect on all Internet users reducing the number of parking pages and “squatter” pages on the net.
