I was shocked to hear that the attorney of American football team the Dallas Cowboys failed to recognise the value of Cowboys.com in a Moniker auction earlier this month.
The attorney thought he was paying $275 for the domain name, and hurriedly handed back the domain when he discovered that he’d actually bid up to $275,000. A lot of people were pretty surprised that the Cowboys didn’t keep the domain name. Cowboys.com for $275,000? A steal! Type-in traffic would abound; it’s brand-friendly; and of course it just has the added credibility of being short and sweet.
Anyway, I bet the whole organisation is kicking itself now, because some savvy domainers have snapped up Cowboys.com at another Moniker auction for $370,000 and are planning to make a country and western themed website using the domain.
As a general aside, it’s easy to forget how ignorant a lot of companies are about all things domain-related (and indeed, internet-related - you only have to look at the truly awful websites of a few large corporations to see that). Domains make a difference. I can’t believe that not everyone’s realised this yet!
