.Asia is here

.Com, .Net,.Co.uk,.EU and now the new kid in town is . Asia.

As the name suggests the .Asia domain name is specific to the Asian region. This market is potentially huge with Internet usage in Asia at a very high level. .Asia has been available to companies, governments, trademarks since October but only yesterday began the so called “Landrush” period. This runs until 12th March and the “go live” period follows.

Put simply for anyone who wants a .Asia domain name you need to register your domain name by the 12th March. Now if this name is unique (only one applicant) than at the end of the landrush period you will (lets say win) that domain .

Now if there is more than one party bidding for a domain name (as is very likely i would think) then the domain name gets entered into an auction phase. This is a closed auction meaning that only the parties involved in the bidding phase may participate (so a case of who wants it more or who is mad enough).

Then its the “go live” period where it is a first come , first served basis and orders will be processed in real time.

It is expected that the .Asia domain name will be as big as .Com with over 400 million Internet users in the region. I am a bit skeptical for now but there is huge potential out there for the domain name.
