A Thought About Transfers

Something that occurred to one of my colleagues the other day:

For most TLDs, when you transfer your domain there’s a registry-imposed fee (and of course your registrar[s] may also impose an additional charge). Included with this registry-imposed fee is a year’s domain registration.

If you register a domain for the maximum registration period, and then decide to transfer that domain soon after registering it, you will not, as far as I can tell, be awarded that year’s registration, but you will still be required to pay the registry-imposed transfer fee.

Bear this in mind, if you’re using a new registrar - it might be wise not to register for the full ten years (or whatever), just in case you decide to transfer.
